EPA Section 608 is required for any technician who handles regulated refrigerants. The exam has four levels — Type I (small appliances), Type II (high-pressure), Type III (low-pressure), Universal — administered by EPA-approved organizations. ATH's prep covers all four levels with unlimited Sensei drilling, contextual code citations against 40 CFR §82.161, and a personalized study queue that adapts to your weak areas. Free with the Apprentice tier.
≤5 lbs refrigerant. Window ACs, dehumidifiers, household refrigerators, vending machines. Often the entry-level cert; can be taken online.
Residential and commercial split systems, supermarket refrigeration, most heat pumps. Required for the bulk of residential HVAC work. Proctored exam.
Centrifugal chillers and other low-pressure systems. Common in large commercial / institutional / industrial applications. Proctored exam.
Pass Types I + II + III on the same exam day for Universal certification. Most ATH trainees aim here; the highest-leverage credential.
Socratic-style. The Sensei poses one question, you answer, the Sensei explains why and what to remember. It tracks which subdomains (Core, Type I, Type II, Type III) you're strong in and which need reps. After 15-20 hours you're shooting at >90% on practice sims — that's when most trainees sit the real exam.
"A 50-ton centrifugal chiller has a measured leak rate of 22% over 12 months. Per 40 CFR §82.157, what is your obligation as the technician on this system?"
EPA Section 608 is a federal certification required under 40 CFR Part 82 for any technician who maintains, services, repairs, or disposes of appliances containing regulated refrigerants. Four levels: Type I, II, III, Universal.
Type I can usually be taken online. Types II, III, and Universal require a proctored exam — either in-person or remote proctored, depending on the certifying organization.
Most trainees complete the ATH curriculum in 15-20 hours over 2-4 weeks. The Sensei adapts drilling intensity to your performance.
Under current EPA rules, no — EPA 608 certification is permanent. Keep your certification card per 40 CFR §82.161.
ATH prep is free with Apprentice tier. The exam itself, through an EPA-approved organization, typically costs $20-$80 depending on type and provider.
No credit card. Sign in, pick HVACR, ask the Sensei to start your EPA 608 study queue.
